What is the Best Hardwood Floor for You?

So you’ve decided to have a hardwood floor installed, but you’re wondering about your options. Not only are there different species of wood to choose from, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, but the planks themselves are built differently. There’s a lot you’re going to want to know before making this decision!

Firstly though, let’s talk about different planks and which ones will be right for you.

Engineered Hardwood Floor Vs. Solid Hardwood Floor

Engineered wood is designed specifically to deal with issues of heat and moisture that affect solid planks and cause warping. It is also generally cheaper than solid hardwood, but not all wood species will come in engineered planks. Engineered hardwood is ideal for flooring that sits atop concrete slabs since the concrete is prone to retaining heat, and therefore has a propensity to cause the wood to expand and contract. Solid wood is your typical plank.

Engineered Hardwood

Engineered hardwood is a versatile flooring option. It is partially hollowed out which allows the wood to expand and contract without warping, cracking, or otherwise becoming damaged. In areas that get hot or have a lot of moisture, like kitchens and bathrooms, engineered hardwood is going to be your only viable option. It is designed specifically for the purpose of resisting the expansions and contractions of normal hardwood planks. It is 100% real wood but is cut specifically for installation as flooring.

Solid Hardwood Floor

Solid hardwood floor is basically a single solid plank. Each board is a single piece, generally 3/4 of an inch thick. One of the advantages of solid hardwood is that it’s able to be refinished over and over again. One of the disadvantages of hardwood is that because of it’s shape, it’s more prone to getting damaged from heat and moisture, so it’s not ideal for kitchens, basements, or around bathrooms.

Choosing the best flooring for your individual needs will take a bit of time and research, but going over your options with an experienced installer can help cut down an otherwise lengthy process. Hardwood flooring is a big investment. We generally tell our clients to take a look at their options for the species of wood that they want and then work from there. There may be limitations on where the wood can be placed, or what your options are in terms of planks, but it will be fun going over your options and coming up with the perfect wood. As always, we’re here to help you along the way!
