Things to Avoid When Caring for Hardwood Floors

A hardwood floor is a significant investment, and you may want to protect it to keep it looking good longer. However, as easy as it is to protect your hardwood floors, it is just as easy to mistakenly harm it. Here are some common mistakes when caring for your hardwood floors and how to avoid them.

Rubber or foam-backed mats or rugs, and plastic pads may discolor your floor by trapping moisture. Instead, use a quality vinyl rug pad inside entryways.

Oil-Based Soaps

Never use oil-based soaps on your hardwood floors. These products will leave a residue that will dull the floors finish. Instead, look for pH-neutral, nontoxic, and biodegradable formulas to clean your hardwood floor. Also, stay away from these products: water and vinegar, Ammonia, Murphy’s Oil Soap, Fantastik, Formula 409, Pledge, Mop ‘n Glo or powdered all-purpose cleaner.

Excess Water

Do not use a wet mop. Excessive amounts of water may dull the finish and be harmful to the floor. Also, avoid placing plants on the floor that could leak. Now that Christmas is here put a plastic bag underneath the tree stand to collect any water that may leak.wood floor cleaning mistakes

Heels, Pets, and Furniture

Avoid wearing high heel shoes or anything that may scratch, gouge or dent your beautiful wood floor. Also, remember to keep your dog off or nails trimmed. And, of course, never slide or push furniture across the hardwood floor. Use felt pads on all tables and chair legs.
