Understanding the Kinds of Hardwood Floors
If you are in the process of choosing a wood floor for your home or business, you will find that there are various kinds. Laminate, solid and engineered floors being the main wood flooring types.
Laminate Floors
This type of floor is a synthetic flooring product composed of multiple layers and built with the tongue-and-groove style of joining boards. Its intention is to mimic the appearance of real wood. Melamine resin and fiberboard material are the most common materials that compose the core layer. And, the upper layer has an imprinted textured image that imitates wood.
The main benefit over other flooring alternative is its price. However, they are extremely sensitive to moisture, which is why they are not recommended to be installed in the bathroom, kitchen or laundry rooms.
Solid Hardwood Floors
As the name says, the entire plank is produced from one solid piece of natural wood. Just take into account that this floor has to be nailed down to wood subfloors; not the best option for homeowners who live on concrete or a slab.
More durable than laminate floors, hardwood is very easy to refinish and sand. On the downside, hardwood is more prone to dings and dents, plus it is costlier than laminate floors.
Engineered Hardwood Floors
Engineered versions consist of several kinds of woods or plywood layers. The middle and bottom layers are made from plywood or cross-laid solid wood planks. The upper layer is manufactured from a solid sawn wood lamella, often prefinished and stained in a factory setting. Select this flooring option for the basement as it can stand up to the heat and dampness above radiant heating systems. Plus, it is a green hardwood flooring option.
