Once your hardwood floors are installed, all the chaos and construction will seem well worth it, but you need to prepare yourself for the installation process. So, how do you prepare yourself for not having floors to walk on? Here’s how you get yourself mentally and physically prepared for installing hardwood floors in your home.
Preparing for the installation
Before you do anything, talk to your contractor about their expectations. Find out what they need from you and what the plan on taking care of themselves. Are they strictly coming to do the installation, or will they be in charge of ripping up old floors, fixing the subfloor, taking out the doors and door trim, or is this something that needs to be done prior to their arrival? Make sure you understand exactly what is required of you before your contractors arrive.
Materials
Many contractors will install owner-supplied materials or offer materials from their selection of prefinished and site-finished products. If you are supplying your own materials, make sure that you coordinate delivery of materials to be there by the time you have scheduled the installation. Remember that all materials will need to acclimate to their new environment. Talk to you contractors about acclimation time so that you can coordinate all the various elements of installing hardwood floors.
Creating a workspace
Installing hardwood floors will require a workspace for your contractors. They’ll need room to work both inside and outside. Much of the preparation will need to have an outdoor workspace to cut and prepare the wood for installation. Prepare a workspace that is covered, in case of bad weather.
Preparing your home
The best contractors will clean up after themselves each day, and contain the dust, as much as possible. However, you still need to clear out the rooms where the floors are being installed. Although contractors are always going to be mindful of your home and your possessions, accidents happen. Remove any photos and items from walls and shelves to avoid the chance of things breaking. Clear the room and give the workers the space they need to install your hardwood floors.
