Why You Need Engineered Hardwood for Below-Grade Flooring?

Using the basement as storage/laundry/junk room is just a waste of space. If you’re looking to turn your basement into a functional room, the first step is to get some decent flooring. Hardwood floors are great in any room and go with any style. However, in a basement, or below-grade room, you have to use engineered floors.

Below-grade hardwood floors

The reason you use solid hardwood flooring in a below-grade room is due to moisture. A room below grade, like your basement, is going to have a high moisture content. And, water is to hardwood floors what kryptonite is to Superman. Unlike Superman, the hardwood flooring industry has found a way to work around the high moisture content in below-grade rooms, and that’s engineered hardwood floors.

Wood and water

Wood is a natural element, and it will react to changes in temperature and moisture. It’s natural for your floors to expand and contract a little from season to season. But, a flooring contractor will be able to acclimate your wood and install it so that the movement won’t ruin your floors. However, in the basement, the moisture content is just too hard to control and will wreak havoc on wood. If you use solid wood in a below-grade room, you’ll end up with cupped, warmed, and damaged floors.

Engineered wood

Engineered wood is much more durable, and has a less dramatic reaction to moisture. The multiple layers that makeup engineered wood are much better equipped to handle changes in the climate and conditions of the room. If you are looking to install hardwood floors in a room below grade, you want to choose engineered wood floors.
