Choosing the Right Rug Pads for Hardwood Floors
If you are a conscious homeowner, you would like to buy a rug pad that will protect your hardwood flooring rather than damage it. Therefore our wood floor experts would like to share what are the right types of rug mats for your hardwood floors.
Polyvinyl-based (PVC)
These pads are the most affordable rug pads that you can find in the market. However, they may not be safe for all hardwood floors, especially with regards to acrylic, lacquer, vinyl, and oil-based finishes as they can permanently discolor the floor. Further, most cheap pads haven’t been analyzed for the non-toxic content or VOC emissions.
Rubber
If the environment is your concern, rubber pads may be the answer. It is a good alternative to the lower quality PVC rug pads. Make sure you read the label to ensure you are buying a correct rubber pad. These products offer a solid grip on the hardwood flooring surface without causing damage.
Synthetic Latex
This version is fabricated to perform well during a short period as they are made of clay fillers and latex. Even though they are very cheap, keep in mind that clay tends to dry out, leaving behind flakes and dust.
Felt
Felt pads are a great way to add additional cushion to your rug. Preferably, use them on larger rugs which can help to anchor the pad down as it lacks a firm grip. Plus, these types of pads are usually environmentally-friendly as they are made from recycled materials.
Felt & Rubber Hybrid
This type is the highest quality option you can choose as it offers the best of both materials. So, just in one product you have the cushion and gripping at the same time.
Lastly, remember always to select a high-quality rug pad to prevent expensively, or even permanent, damage to your beautiful hardwood floors.
