Once you have opted for hardwood flooring, you still have work to do, as more decisions have to be made, which type of wood you’re going to go for, and what color. You will also need to decide between strip flooring and plank flooring.
Plank Flooring
Plank flooring, or wide plank, includes both hard and soft woods. They are milled from lumber that has been cut off from the main trunk of the trees. Therefore it is a wood that contains more heartwood; thus it is more resistant and durable. It comes in wider, bigger strips called planks, up to 20 inches wide. Usually, the thickness is up to the client.
Strip Flooring
Strip flooring is basically, a type of wood milled from the lesser parts of trees, that usually includes the top part of the trunk and the large limbs. Strip flooring is not as durable because this wood contains less heartwood. They are always cut into shorter and narrower pieces.
Which Floor to Choose
Plank flooring is, therefore, of better quality and better value than strip flooring. Since the planks are wider, it takes less time and work to install them; they were always the first option a long time ago for this very reason. They used old timber cut from the virgin forests that were so plentiful at the time. Old colonial homes are a good example of this, and why such floors have a timeless look that is irreplaceable. You will find that a lot of reclaimed wood is wider. Reclaimed plank flooring always has a lot of character, as it has already had a life, and time left its marks.
Strip flooring is, on the other hand, more economical, and it may be precisely what you need for a particular project.
