What You Need to Know Before Getting Your Wood Floors Refinished

Summertime in Colorado is the perfect time to get your hardwood floors refinished. Although hardwood floors are durable and will last a long time, seasons of foot traffic will eventually take its toll. However, there are a few considerations you’ll have to make before hiring a contractor to refinish your floors.

When to refinish your floors

Refinishing your floors

Refinishing your floors can bring back the natural beauty of your hardwood floors. Although wear and tear happen slowly and can create an attractive patina on your floors, there are times when the dings and dents and scratches become overwhelming. When it’s time to refinish your floors, the first step is to find a time that is convenient for you, but also for your floors. Yes, wood floors will have a say as to when it’s best to be refinished, and a lot of it has to do with the weather.

The best time to refinish your floors

Wood floors will differently to different types of weather. Although they are indoors, if you’re in a rainy or humid period, think about waiting to have your floors refinishes. When we refinish your floors, we have to strip away the protective finish. That means that the naked wood is vulnerable to excess moisture in the air. To prevent your floors from absorbing extra moisture, wait for a time when there is less moisture to deal with. If your floors absorb moisture during the refinishing process, the whole process may take longer because we have to wait for the wood to re-acclimate. Plus, the finish will take longer to dry in wetter times.

Giving up a room in your home

You also have to be prepared to give up the use of the room, rooms, or house, depending on the size of your refinishing project. Make sure that you schedule the contractors for a time when you can avoid using the room(s) in question.

Find a time when you don’t need to use the room that is being refinished.

When we work, we do everything in our power to minimize dust and to keep a clean workspace. However, refinishing is a naturally dusty process, so you need to be prepared for a little dust to wander into other rooms. You would do well to cover furniture and put down rugs in adjacent rooms, just for extra protection and to minimize cleanup.

Water-based floor finish

Talk to your contractor about the best finish to minimize the smell of chemicals, like using a water-based floor finish. Similarly, you can choose a type of finish that is quick drying, cutting back on the amount of time it will take for the refinishing job to be done.
