Understanding the Basics of How Solid Hardwood Floors Are Made

The more you understand the construction method and the materials used to make hardwood floors, the more equipped you are to make smart choices. Since hardwood floors can last for centuries, you want to make sure that you get it right the first time. Here are the basics you need to understand about solid hardwood flooring.

The basics of solid hardwood flooring

The basic construction of solid hardwood flooring is pretty self-explanatory. Solid hardwood flooring is made from one piece of solid wood. Typically, solid hardwood will come with the tongue and groove installation method. We often think of solid hardwood flooring as being unfinished. However, there are plenty of pre-finished solid hardwood flooring options.

Solid wood species

With solid wood, you can get just about any species that you want. For hardwood floors, the most common wood species are oak, maple, cherry, and hickory. Oak flooring is by far the most common and most popular wood for hardwood floors. It’s a classic and beautiful choice. However, solid wood comes in multiple domestic and exotic species.

Longevity

Solid wood floors, if well cared for, can last for centuries. The longevity of solid wood floors makes them the most sought-after type of floor. Not only will solid hardwood floors increase the value of your home, but they will only become more beautiful over time. Solid wood floors age very well as the layers of patina appear naturally, slowly adding more texture and characteristics to your floors. Some people love the effect the patina creates; others want to restore their floors.

Refinishing

Solid wood floors are easy to maintain and can be sanded and refinished.

Hardwood floors can be allowed to age naturally, or they can be refinished several times. Refinishing hardwood floors will bring them back to their original glory, but you can also change the look of your floors. Refinishing will also increase the longevity of your floors.

Limitations of solid wood flooring

Solid wood does have a few limitations. It is not as resistant to changes in moisture and humidity. The changing climate in Colorado from season to season can make solid wood floors expand and contract. However, with humidity control, proper acclimation, and installation you can easily get and maintain solid wood floors in your Colorado home. However, you can’t have solid wood floors installed below grade, and solid wood flooring is limited to certain sub-floors and installation methods.
