What’s the difference between a gym floor that lasts and one that shows wear, gaps or loses its finish within a few years? Generally, it comes down to the species, installation and expertise of the team putting it down.
Here’s what you get you choose Tongue & Groove for wood gym floors in Denver:
When you choose a wood floor for your gym, it needs to last. Repeated impact, heavy equipment, lateral movement and fluctuating humidity put stress on the floor in a way that a living room never would. At Tongue & Groove, we help Denver businesses choose, install and maintain hardwood gym flooring so it performs as well as it looks. Visit our hardwood flooring showroom in Denver or let us come to you.
Not every hardwood floor is built for athletics. A gym needs flooring that meets its demands that standard installations don’t account for. Impact absorption, surface hardness, finish durability and moisture management are all essential in a gym environment. Here’s what separates a purpose-built gym floor from a standard installation:
Species selection matters. Maple gym flooring is the industry standard for athletic facility and gym applications. Why? It offers a tight, consistent grain, high surface hardness and resists denting and wear. Hard maple rates 1,450 on the Janka hardness scale so it’s one of the most durable domestic species on the market.
You can also choose white oak for wood gym floors. It has a bit more character than in the grain and a warmer tone than maple. Hardness levels are ideal for fitness use. We walk you through the performance characteristics of each species during your consultation so you can choose the wood that suits your workout style and aesthetic goals.
A standard residential subfloor isn’t necessarily the right choice for a gym wood floor. Based on the intensity of use, a cushioned subfloor, sometimes called a floating subfloor or shock-absorbing underlayment can be installed under the hardwood to reduce impact transmission, protect the wood below and make the surface more comfortable underfoot.
If your gym is built over a concrete subfloor, proper moisture testing and vapor barrier installation are essential, especially in Denver’s variable climate. We assess subfloor conditions on every project and recommend the system that makes the most sense for your space.
Gym floors can take a beating. The right finish should be hard, durable and repairable, not just attractive. We offer several premium finish options including water-based polyurethanes, oil-modified polyurethanes and UV-cured finishes. Our UV-cured finish is ceramic fortified, instantly cured and 40% harder than our two-component water-based finish, which is ideal for busy gym spaces.
We use leading floor finish brands including Arboritec, Pallman and Bona. Plus, we document every custom finish formula so we can ensure your floors match if we need to refinish it down the road.
Denver’s altitude and dry climate affect hardwood gym floors in ways that most of the country doesn’t have to deal with. Being 5,280 feet above sea level with indoor relative humidity that can drop well below 30% in winter, gymnasium wood floors experience more seasonal movement than most regions. That’s why proper installation, acclimation and ongoing humidity management are essential.
Our team accounts for the following when working on every wood gym floor project in Denver and Colorado:
Maple gym flooring needs time to acclimate to the temperature and humidity of the facility before installation day. Colorado has a dry climate. Rushing acclimation will lead to the gymnasium floor gapping and cupping while the subfloor separates. We follow NWFA acclimation standards on every project.
Many gyms and athletic facilities are built on concrete slabs. Concrete subfloor needs thorough moisture testing and appropriate vapor barrier installation before any wood floor goes down. Leaving elevated moisture levels unaddressed at the subfloor stage is one of the most common reasons gymnasium hardwood floors fail. It’s also one of the most expensive problems to correct.
We recommend maintaining relative indoor humidity between 30-55% year-round in gymnasium facilities. Those without HVAC systems capable of handling this range will be addressed during the consultation so we can help you identify the proper solution. Many of our preferred suppliers offer product warranties as low as 18% relative humidity, which reflects the realities of Colorado’s climate.
Gymnasium wood flooring installation is demanding. It requires deep knowledge of athletic flooring systems, subfloor engineering, finish chemistry and climate performance. Our commercial hardwood flooring services are built on the same core values that drive all of our projects:

We could not be happier with the beautiful white oak hardwood flooring we ordered from T & G! Chris and his staff are SO knowledgeable and educated us on all of the options. We ended up using our contractor for install who also said their product is incredible. We found them through our friends who also had a great experience! Highly recommend!Posted on Google![]()

Took the On-line Flooring 101 course from Christopher Keale, with my wife. We are now educated enough to know what sort of flooring we want to use. Highly recommend if you have doubts and don’t know what to get/use. Glad we did it. Takes a little bit of time and is well worth the effort. It took the mystery out of our selection of flooring. We feel that we made the right decisions and are happy with outcome. Highly recommended if you have questions about the what, where and how’s of all the different types of flooring and installation.Posted on Google![]()

T&G installed engineered hardwood at our newly renovated home. The entire experience from start to finish has been A+, and all the staff with whom I have interacted, with a particular "shout out" to David Garcia, have been professional and extremely responsive. Quality work and service to match. In fact, after experiencing some construction related issues resulting from the general contractor and its impact to the cleanliness of the floor, T&G jumped right in, showed up the same day, and provided guidance and assistance in arranging for a professional deep cleaning. Highly recommend!Posted on Google![]()

The results are fantastic - the original problem is gone, looks good as new. Many thanks to Kass and the T&G Flooring team for such an excellent job.Posted on Google![]()

Everything about the process went well from estimate to conclusion. T&G is prompt and works a long day. The refinished floor looks better than the original. Dust was minimal and easy to clean up when finished. All options were explained clearly and with patience.Posted on Facebook![]()

We hired T&G Flooring based on several recommendations from former customers on NextDoor. We wanted to have our yellow oak flooring stained a darker color. T&G sent out Chris to give us an estimate. Chris was thorough, professional, and friendly. He answered a lot of questions and gave me a very good idea of what to expect. We stained roughly 1200sqft of hardwood on our main floor. Project took 5 days to complete (we scheduled the project for when we were already planning to be out of town). The final floor turned out AMAZING. We're so happy with it. Makes the entire house feel different and more modern. We did need to have Chris come out to do a small touch-up on an area where the stain wasn't quite even. He took care of that the next day after I made the request. We were very pleased with T&G and especially Chris and would recommend them to others.Posted on Facebook![]()

My wife and I moved into her parents' home (built in the 1950's) about a year ago. There was carpeting everywhere! We wanted to have hardwood like we had in our previous home. We found out that all that carpeting was covering up red and white oak hardwood. We talked to Chris Atencio of T&G Flooring and agreed to have them resurface the flooring. OMG what a difference! The crews came in, did their thing, and we now have beautiful hardwood floors that look absolutely marvelous. We are very pleased that we went with T&G. Their quality of work, professionalism, attention to detail, reasonable cost, and friendly demeanor all added up to a wonderful experience. We highly recommend T&G Flooring for all your needs and suggest that you visit their office at 590 Quivas St. in Denver. You will be amazed. Alan FearPosted on Facebook![]()

I used T&G for the Morrison Co project - the assistance I received before , during and after the project was impeccable. As a professional my jobs are stronger due to the team we put together. T&G was on time - on budget and they were professional and courteous to my client with or without my presence on the jobsite. I was located in Seattle during the install of the new floors and I was impressed with the constant contact and daily updates of the progress.Posted on Houzz![]()

T&G Flooring is very professional, reasonably priced, and most important - does an outstanding job. Chris, the owner, is honest and a pleasure to work with...and Omar, who installed our hardwood floors and baseboards is a complete pro. My house looks beautiful! Omar has a ton of experence. I was especially curious how the difficult spots were going to turn out, and he executed them perfectly. It's hard to find any flaws with the hardwood or baseboards. Would definitely recommend T&G Flooring!Posted on Angie's List![]()

I chose another company whose bid was slightly lower than T & G's. This was a mistake! In the end, my new floor looks fine, but there were many issues along the way, which I don't think I would have experienced had I chosen T & G. Chris Keale and his company are focused on customer service; the company I chose is not. The next time I need hardwood floor services, I will definitely hire T & G!Posted on Houzz![]()

I received bids from T & G and two other companies to remove old flooring and install new hardwood flooring in my home. I ended up choosing one of the other companies, whose bid was slightly less expensive, and I deeply regret my decision. I had multiple issues with the other company, which I now know has terrible customer service. T & G provides not only excellent flooring services but also excellent customer service. I should have chosen T & G for my project, and I will certainly use them in the future.Posted on Houzz![]()

Chris and his installation team were extremely informative, supportive and patient with respect to our recent hardwood flooring purchase and install. We were looking for an extremely competent flooring company, whose product would be higher in quality, and in appearance, than that of other companies, whose products are made overseas. We were thrilled to purchase our beautiful new walnut hardwood floor, which was domestically milled and finished, from T&G Flooring. We had never purchased a custom made floor before, and Chris' knowledge and reassurance each step of the way made for an exceptional experience. The installation experience was just as exceptional! The installer, was meticulous and laid each board with precision and care. The installer neatly stacked his tools and cleaned the workspace each day, so our home was not left in disarray. We would highly recommend T&G Flooring to anyone who wants top notch flooring service, support, sales, and installation.Posted on Houzz![]()

T&G did a remarkable job restoring my very ugly and dated wood floor. I am an interior designer / architect and I am very picky about quality, service and professionalism. They went the distance on all counts...restoring a floor, which was difficult to begin with, and working with me to achieve a STUNNING finish. I appreciate their ATTENTION TO DETAILS and the level of service which is rare in my profession. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM. Everyone that comes to the house is so complimentary to the design, particularly the floor. SEE PHOTOSPosted on Houzz![]()

T&G Flooring installed hard wood flooring in our dining room. From the individual who gave the estimate to the individual who installed the floor, we were treated with respect and appreciated their professional attidude. We were very appreciative of how well the work area was cleaned up every day as well as the area used outside. The young man who installed the floor told us about every step in the process and asked if we had any questions about what was to be done. He was very professional and very personable. We are totally happy with our new flooring and with the quality of work performed by T&G Flooring.Posted on Houzz![]()

We have worked with T&G for several years as our preferred installation company for our reclaimed hardwood floors. They do an absolutely fantastic job with everything they touch. We couldn't be more thrilled with our floors and the work done by the crew at T&G Flooring! Owner Chris Keele came out to our house and gave us an estimate for the work, answered all of our many questions, and actually explained everything in very easy to understand terms. He educated us on all the options, gave helpful suggestions along the way, and made us feel at ease. We chose T&G Flooring over 4 other contractors who also gave us estimates. T&G wasn't the lowest bid, but not the highest either - we felt it was very fair. The project took a few days longer than expected but everything was clearly communicated to us. The crew was fantastic! Sam (installer), Jose & Cody (sanding, staining and finishing) and Steve (trim work) were all very skilled, professional, and did absolutely beautiful work. The transition between new and old floor is completely seamless, and it turned out better than we imagined - it's gorgeous! We couldn't decide on a stock stain color so they custom mixed the perfect one for us. We love our new floors! We would highly recommend Chris and the whole crew at T&G Flooring for any hardwood project, big or small!Posted on Angie's List![]()

Choose this company because they had good prices and quality products. They have evening open houses with the public where you get a very thorough education on hardwood floors. All pluses and minuses of different woods explained, especially how they relate to a semi-arid Denver metro climate and usage. Very pleasant workers, explained every step. Dirt and dust kept to a minimum. Explained what to do and not do to keep floor in shape. Left a container of stain for me to use in case I need to cover a scratch/ding. My pets don't harm the floor. Friends comment on smoothness of floor compared to their floors.
The price of your wood gym flooring project is impacted by square footage, subfloor conditions, cushion system requirements, species selection, finish type and whether it requires installation, refinishing or repair. Every facility and project scope is different so we don’t work from a flat rate. Contact us directly to get an accurate picture of your investment.
Hard maple is most common for gymnasium wood flooring and basketball court wood flooring. Surface hardness, grain consistency and dimensional stability are required for safe athletic use and court line painting. We source premium maple gym flooring from trusted suppliers that understand Colorado’s altitude and humidity range.
The majority of gymnasium hardwood floors use 3/4″ thick solid maple planks. The overall floor system including the subfloor cushion layer and vapor barrier adds additional thickness depending on the system specified. We design the full floor system for your facility’s structural requirements and use case during the planning phase.
The majority of gymnasium wood floors benefit from a screen-and-recoat maintenance cycle every 1-3 years, but depends on the use intensity and a full sand-and-refinish every 8-15 years. Regular maintenance and refinishing is the most affordable way to help the gym floor last longer and to maintain safe, consistent playing conditions. We will assess the floor individually and recommend the right wood floor refinishing schedule for your facility.
Installation timelines greatly vary. However, your specific project will depend on the square footage, subfloor preparation requirements, cushion system installation, acclimation time and finish cure cycles. Most gymnasium wood floor installations range from one to several weeks depending on the project scope. We build a clear project timeline for every installation so your facility can plan accordingly.
Generally, yes. Refinishing is more cost-effective than full replacement. As long as the subfloor system is structurally sound and maple hardwood has enough wear layer remaining, a full sand-and-refinish can bring an aging gymnasium floor back to safe, attractive playing condition. We will assess your floor and give you an honest recommendation before we start working.
For gymnasium and athletic flooring applications, we recommend hard, durable finishes with court line paint systems. Our UV-cured finish is ceramic fortified, instantly cured and 40% harder than our best two-component water-based finish so it’s one of the strongest options for busy gym environments. Water-based and oil-modified polyurethanes are ideal. Our team uses products from leading brands like Arboritec, Pallman and Bona on every project.
Yes. In gymnasium and athletic facilities, a shock-absorbing subfloor system is standard. These systems offer impact absorption and ball response characteristics needed for safe athletic use while protecting the hardwood from moisture migration through concrete slabs. We specify the subfloor system for your facility’s use requirements and structural conditions during the project planning phase.
Regular dust mopping removes grit and debris. Make this a daily maintenance habit. Abrasive particles underfoot can cause surface wear. Clean with products approved for hardwood athletic floors. Do not wet mop, steam clean or use unapproved cleaning chemicals. Maintain indoor humidity between 30-55% year-round. Use protective matting at facility entry points to reduce tracked-in moisture and debris. We provide specific care and maintenance instructions for your floor’s finish type after every installation and refinishing project.
With proper installation and maintenance, a hardwood gymnasium floor can last 50 years or more with regular refinishing cycles. The lifespan of the gym floor comes down to the species selection, subfloor system quality, finish maintenance, humidity management and use intensity. When installed to NWFA standards and refinished regularly, maple gym flooring is one of the most durable flooring investments a facility can make.
